As part of the 40th anniversary celebrations, the Department of Geography in association with NIRSA were delighted to host Prof. Kevin Cox (Ohio State) in April 2012 for a three day visit. Prof Cox is a world renowned political geographer with interests in the relationship between social theory, particularly historical geographical materialism, and geography and in particular the capitalist city. His ground breaking papers on local economic development and scale remain amongst the most cited in the history of the discipline. In 2012 Professor Cox received the lifetime Achievement Award from Association of American Geographers at the AAG Conference in New York, This award recognised not only his research accomplishments but also his ongoing outstanding mentoring of PhD students and newer faculty. While at NUI Maynooth, Prof Cox presented a seminar ("Countries in Question") to students and staff and held a workshop for research students and supervisors.
