Biography

Stephanie completed her undergraduate studies in NUIM in 2009 graduating with First Class Honours in Geography. A continuing interest in climate-human interactions motivated her to pursue a Masters in Climate Change in the Geography Department, from which she graduated with First Class Honours in 2010. Her master's thesis entitled The Energy Balance of the Urban Surface, focussed on two instrumented sites in Dublin. Both the radiation and energy budgets of a typical urban and suburban environment were investigated from high resolution observations obtained from micrometeorological instruments deployed at both sites. Stephanie is now pursuing her doctoral degree in ICARUS.

Thesis

Quantifying carbon dioxide concentrations and fluxes for Dublin.
Supervisors: Dr Rowan Fealy
Dr Gerald Mills (UCD)

Project Description
Traditionally atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations have been measured in remote environments so as to eliminate industrial and urban effects when capturing background concentrations. Increasingly evident however is the necessity to investigate urban atmospheric concentrations given firstly, the increased proportion of the global population who now reside in urban environments, and secondly, the disproportionate emissions that are sourced there. This project proposes to quantify CO2 concentrations for Dublin, from two existing instrumented sites, a suburban, homogeneous environment and an inner city, heterogeneous environment. The temporal and spatial nature of fluxes will be examined in conjunction with socio-economic datasets and local land use characteristics in order to assign differing geographical contributions to CO2 emissions.
