Tourism and Climate Change in Ireland - Impacts and Adaptation
|
| Description of Project: |
| This research aims to investigate the impacts projected climate change is likely to have the Irish tourism sector. Following this, strategic recommendations on how the Irish tourism sector can best adapt to a changing climate will be made.
The investigation of climate change impacts on tourism will be supported by the development of a Tourism Climatic Index (TCI) for Ireland based on the TCI first established by Mieczkowski in 1985. The TCI is a quantitative approach used to evaluate a regions climate for the purpose of general tourism activity. This research is the first application of the empirically statistically downscaled data from the HadCM3 global climate model generated by Fealy and Sweeney (2008) to a tourism climatology model (TCI) for Ireland. Using observed data from 14 synoptic weather stations across Ireland, a TCI is constructed for the baseline period of 1961-1990. Future TCIs are calculated for the 14 synoptic stations under the A2 SRES projection for the time periods of 2021-2050 and 2051-2080.
Stemming from the investigation of possible impacts on Irish tourism, the concepts of climate change adaptation, vulnerability, adaptive capacity and resilience will be employed to aid the development of appropriate adaptive measures for the Irish tourism industry.
